Hinckley Fire Depot

& Gift Shop

Interprets the fire of 1894 that destroyed six towns including Hinckley. Within 4 hours more than 400 square miles were black and smoldering and 418 people lost their lives. The museum is housed in the restored railroad depot which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The depot was destroyed in the fire but was rebuilt immediately. The museum includes original men's and women's waiting rooms, the eating area known as the Beanery, the Freight Room where once every hour a 20 min. documentary video is played, and the depot agent's apartment upstairs. Banning State Park
Minnesota's first Wild and Scenic River tumbles turbulently through a rugged gorge in Banning State Park. The Kettle River earned its name from the water-swirled potholes, or kettles, formed in the rock over many thousands of years. Sandstone ledges frame the deeply carved valley where stone cutters quarried the hard, pink stone in the late 1800's.

Removal of a ninety year-old dam in 1995 near the park's southern boundary renders the Kettle River once again free-flowing. Today, this magnificent park welcomes all visitors, from hikers seeking spectacular scenery to kayakers anxious to experience the fury of Minnesota's best whitewater.

St. Croix State Park
Minnesota’s largest state park, St. Croix is located at the confluence of the State Wild and Scenic Kettle River and the National Wild and Scenic St. Croix River. In the 1930's, St. Croix was the location of a National Recreational Demonstration Area, where Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) personnel developed park facilities later modeled in recreation sites nationwide. The park's critical role in the development of the National Park Service has earned it the distinction of National Historic Landmark. Visitors to St. Croix may experience Jack Pine Savanna, one of the rarest remaining natural communities in the Midwest. Camping, canoeing, biking, hiking and interpretive programs are popular activities at St. Croix State Park.
